6 Ways to Safely Ride Your Bike
When riding your bicycle on the open road, safety is paramount. Whether you’re venturing in the country or a crowded city street, here are our favorite ways to stay safe during your trek!

Road Rules
First thing’s first! Before you hop on your bike, make sure you have a good understanding of the basics. Bicycles should always stick to the same rules as motor vehicles. Learn and utilize hand signals so other vehicles can safely share the road with you. Never skip through a red light or speed through a crosswalk. Most importantly, don’t leave home without your protective gear!
Keep Your Bike in Great Shape
You’ll want to make sure your bicycle is in optimum shape and fits you properly. Are the wheels secure? Are the brakes functioning and not overly worn out? Adjust your seat so that you fit comfortably and ensure that there is a little distance between you and the bar. Before going out in a busy area, it’s helpful to go for a test trip to ensure everything is in working order.
Be Visible at All Times
Making sure you’re clearly noticeable at all times should be one of your top priorities. During inclement weather and when it’s dark out, make sure to utilize a light. Wearing reflective clothing or outfitting your bicycle with reflective materials is also a smart idea.
Keep an Eye Out for Pedestrians
When riding in busy areas, remember that pedestrians don’t always use crosswalks. Be sure to pay close attention. It’s your duty as a cyclist to pay careful attention to your surroundings no matter the circumstances. Be especially cautious when riding through poorly lit areas, school campuses and busy city intersections.
Don’t Drink and Ride
Alcohol and vehicles don’t mix…Bicycles are no exception! With any alcohol intake, the probability of collision dramatically increases. Your cycling skills could be impaired even if you’re under the legal limit. It’s better to be safe than sorry!
Stay Focused
Research shows distractions can have heavy consequences. Headphones can make the sounds of traffic and pedestrians harder to hear, which can put you in immediate danger. Stay focused on your cycling and keep an eye on what’s looming up ahead. Unexpectedly cycling onto rough terrain, slippery leaves or a pothole could be extremely dangerous if you don’t proceed carefully and slowly.
